Group projects

The main part of the module will centre around three projects, to be undertaken in groups of three (or exceptionally two). Each project is comprised of three stages scheduled over three weeks. An mandatory oral presentation must be made to the class on the Thursday at the end of each stage.

Stage 1. Modelling.
Make the mathematical model of the real life problem. This model is the basis for any simulation.
Stage 2. Simulation.
Implement and run a simulation based on the model.
Stage 3. Analysis.
Interpret the results of the simulation and draw statistical inferences.

The oral presentations at the end of each stage are mandatory requirements and assessed individually.

  1. Each student makes one of the oral presentation from each project.
  2. Each student must make one presentation from each stage (modelling, simulation, analysis) over the course of three projects.
  3. A two-person group is only required to make two out of the three presentations per project, but are advised that each presentation is a valuable opportunity to receive feedback.
  4. Three satisfactory presentations (according to ยง1-2 above) is a prerequisite to sit the exam. In the event of unsatisfactory presentations, extra assignments may be given to qualify for the exam.
  5. Absence is subject to the same regulations as regular exams.
  6. Picking up good ideas from the presentations of your class mates is allowed.


  1. The syllabus is defined by the video lectures and exercise sheets.
  2. The exercise sheets are most important. Students who can answer all the exercise sheets will have little trouble in the exam.
  3. The exam may contain a few questions which have been covered only by the video lectures, but such questions will make up only a minor part of the exam.
  4. Sample exam papers and last year's exam have been published to give a further impression of what is expected.

Rules of the game

This module is credit-bearing higher education. It is not supposed to be easy. It is not supposed to be particularly difficult either, but it does take both time and effort to learn. It is your responsibility to learn, and you have to put hard work into it. We are here to help, but it is your responsibility to ask for help.

We assume that you ...

  1. Have a reasonable background in mathematics and programming from college and previous modules.
  2. Use all of the provided learning aids and activities.
  3. Put in the 16-20h per week assumed by the Bologna documents.
  4. Come to the classroom sessions and ask questions.

We, on our part, will ...

  1. Help as best I can in response to questions.
  2. Amend, change, or extend the learning aids where appropriate.

Note that both videos and exercise sheets may be amended during the semester. Such changes will be announced in the News section on the web pages. You should make sure that you are familiar with the last version of the material before the exam. Changes will not be made arbitrarily and hopefully not too often; they will be made to correct errors and ommissions, or to make the material easier to understand.
